The Owl

In the last few weeks I have noticed the distinct hoot of an owl as I wake up to start my day. This is not unusual in itself but one recent morning it dawned on me...I have awaken to that same wonderful sound most of my life.
I first heard it as a boy of 12 when my family moved us from the Bronx to a small ranch house on a 10 acre piece of land in what was called Freehold at the time. Mostly woods and many animals.I stayed there till I was 22 years old in a dark, dank green room at the halls end.
I spent 18 years in a small one bedroom house in Jackson Township semi secluded in a country setting, mostly alone except for the ever present sounds emanating from the woods.I remember distinctly waking up to the sound of an owl there as well.
Now as my 10th year here in Waretown winds down I have become attuned to the sounds that surround me. The birds are of a very special interest to me as my 4 parrots enjoy squawking loudly as the sun comes up every morning.I am very fortunate to say that the sound of an owl, (the same owl?) has been one constant in my life I truly love.

  1. Rickey, Sweet Rickey, I have the same attraction to birds all my life- my sun conure died while I was away April5, 2010 and I miss him terribly!!! I made peace with him (Chico) one day when I realized ( message from him?) that he was here to serve his purpose to get me through a terrible divorce and could fly free anywhere now. I still live with my parakeet, Lolita(white/blue) that talks and Margarita(green parrolet)- both fly free in my upstairs apt.here in New Smyrna Beach with a pond out my window(must live by water- it energizes and centers me) and ducks(new eggs laid recently) and turtles(I just released my yellow-belly "Timmy, Timmy"(from South Park show LOL!)) and fish- Birds are you and my Spirit Guides- in Native American, we get an animal Spirit Guide- and my name was going to be "Robin", but my dad did not want everyone calling me "Robin Red-Breast" as I grew up. Who ever said they would? Oh well, keep blogging, I really enjoy your mind and??!

  3. Ah , the " Hoo-Hoo" birds. I am so taken with the birds in my backyard too. Even though I live on a pretty busy corner, there seems to be a multitude of birds that we(my husband and I) sit and watch all summer. It's tranquil against the heavy twp. trucks rolling by and other daily traffic.
